Sarbanes Who?

Reuters: Former Refco CEO Charged, Shares Sinking. The former chief executive of Refco Inc. was charged with securities fraud on Wednesday as shares of one of the world’s largest commodities and futures brokers continued to plummet and have now lost over 60 percent in three days.

Justia Launches US Supreme Court Center Featuring Online Searchable US Supreme Court Opinions

The First Monday in October. A pretty inconsequential day for most people unless your favorite alliterative baseball team — Go Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim! 😉 — is in the playoffs or you are a die-hard Supreme Court watcher.

For Supreme Court fans, I wanted to let you know that Justia, a provider of search engine optimized web sites for law firms, just launched a beta release of their US Supreme Court Center with Oyez and US Court Forms.

The new United States Supreme Court Center initially features a free online searchable database of US Supreme Court Opinions. Please take a look if you are interested.

PalmSource Hoping to Make It Big in Japan

Wireless Week: PalmSource Snapped up. PalmSource shares surged 77 percent following news that the software company is being purchased by Japan-based Access Co, which plans to leverage PalmSource to extend its reach in the mobile device sector. The deal is valued at $324.3 million.

Lately, I’ve been browing through the trading suspensions page at the SEC’s web site. Recently, the SEC announced a temporary suspension of trading for eGlobe whose last EDGAR filing was back in 2001. Why now? 😉 I’ve also added eGlobe contracts to the site.

Open Sesame

Reuters: Yahoo to pay $1 billion for Alibaba stake. Yahoo Inc. is close to paying $1 billion and forking over its China operations for a 35 percent stake of China’s second-largest e-commerce operator, Alibaba.com, a source close to the discussions said.

I know this is old news by now. You can find the Stock Purchase and Contribution Agreement between Yahoo! and Alibaba on the site now. There are additional Yahoo/Alibaba agreements on the Yahoo! contracts page.

SEC Targets ex-Kmart Executives

Yahoo!/Reuters: SEC charges former Kmart execs with fraud. The SEC accused former Chief Executive Charles Conaway and former Chief Financial Officer John McDonald of making materially false and misleading disclosures about the company’s liquidity and related matters in its quarterly report for the third quarter ended Oct. 31, 2001.

James McNerney Joins Boeing

Last month, the Boeing Co. hired James McNerney, a protoge of Jack Welch, as its new CEO. I’ve posted James McNerney’s employment agreement with Boeing on the web site.

Yesterday, I received an email from Chris Fontes, the Senior Director of Strategic Marketing at FindLaw, telling me that FindLaw will be shutting down its free web site business on August 1st – as in 2 1/2 weeks. That’s short notice.

For solo practitioners or small law firms looking for free law firm Web sites, the fine folks at Justia offer such a product. And, these aren’t some rudimentary web sites that you wouldn’t want to show off to your clients. Justia offers stylish search engine optimized web sites with contact forms and other fancy features.

Concerto’s $1B Tune Attracts Aspect

Boston Business Journal: Concerto Software to Acquire Aspect Communications for $1B. Privately held Concerto Software Inc. is acquiring Aspect Communications Corp. for approximately $1 billion in cash, ending Aspect’s 15-year run as a public company.

Forbes/Associated Press: Levi Strauss 2Q Profit More Than Quadruples. Levi Strauss & Co.’s second-quarter profit more than quadrupled, reflecting a more disciplined financial approach that could set the stage for an initial public offering by the fabled maker of jeans.
