H&R Blocked

Reuters: H&R Block lawsuit settlement blocked. H&R Block Inc., the largest U.S. tax preparer, on Friday said a federal judge had blocked a proposed $360 million settlement of a lawsuit over loans given in anticipation of tax refunds.

I’ve added H&R Block contracts to the site. Besides the usual employment agreements, this batch also includes a number of refund anticipation loan agreements with H&R Block’s partners.

I’ve written about some of these companies before, but because of new guidelines from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation that may affect the entire payday-lending industry, the time has come to do a thorough comparison among them.

Poor Market Conditions Blamed Again

Boston Business Journal: Egenera Cancels IPO, Blames Poor Market Conditions. Egenera Inc. has withdrawn plans for an initial public offering of stock, reportedly to have been valued as much as $125 million. The company indicated market conditions are not optimal.

If I were the market, I might be developing some type of complex by now. Every time an IPO gets canceled, who gets blamed? Sure, the IPO was canceled, but not before Egenera contracts were disclosed.

Gotta Have Faith

Bloomberg: China Changes Offshore Rules, Venture Capital Cools. Global venture capital funds cut investment into Chinese companies in the first quarter after regulators issued rules that may hinder overseas share sales and hamper their ability to realize profits.

The Bloomberg article mentions China Techfaith Wireless Communication Technology Ltd., which recently raised $142 million in an intial public offering. I’ve posted China Techfaith contracts to the web site.

I’ve just added Parlux Fragrances contracts to the web site, which includes a licensing agreement between Parlux and Paris Hilton. However, you’re more into a whiff of Wimbledon, there’s also licensing agreements with Andy Roddick and Maria Sharapova.

Linkin Seeks Emancipation

New York Times: Linkin Park Wants Out of Warner, Citing Lack of Confidence. Days before an expected public stock offering from the Warner Music Group, the rap-rock band Linkin Park demanded yesterday to be released from its recording contract with the company, saying internal cost cuts may have left the music giant “unable to compete in today’s global music marketplace.”
